Little attempt has been made by historians of architecture to consider classical buildings in terms of the materials and methods used in their construction. In the first of two talks the speaker examines the change that came over Roman architecture between about A.D. 60 and A.D. 130 with the increasingly assured use of Roman concrete. ' What in effect had been achieved during this astonishingly short period was nothing less than the turning inside out of the traditional Greek idea of architecture.'

Can Democracy Survive in India?

' Most observers in the West were at first critical of India's intention to establish a democratic system of government.' The speaker surveys the reasons for this attitude-the strength of the caste system, of monarchical and feudal traditions, eighty per cent illiteracy-and assesses their weight today against many factors which he believes are strongly favourable to the democracy which has been established.
