Part 1
The French composer, Olivier Messiaen , who will be forty-eight next December, is one of the most original figures in music today, and his works invariably arouse keen interest whenever they are performed. Like many of his compositions, L'Ascension is permeated by a spirit of religious mysticism. Written in 1932 as a set of four organ pieces, it was scored for orchestra a year later with a new third movement. The titles of the movements are taken from various passages in the Bible.
