This is the subject of a recently published work by D. P. O'Connell in which he attempts to answer these questions in the light of British practice.

Nirad Chaudhuri's Autobiography of an Unknown Indian created a considerable stir when it was published in Britain in 1951. Last year the Overseas Services of the BBC invited him to visit England to see how far the country corresponded to the idea of it that he had gained from literature. This is the first of four programmes of his impressions.
