When about three-quarters of the able-bodied men of an African village are away working in the mines or towns it is clear that the tribal structure and values, and the very existence of those left behind, may be seriously threatened. Professor Mitchell shows, however, that the effect varies greatly according to the mode of agriculture traditionally practised by a tribe. He believes that it is not the recurrent absence of men in itself which will break up the tribe, but the fact that the problem of food supply to the growing urban centres makes inevitable a drastic change in agricultural methods which strikes at the root of all tribal systems.
