First of a series of six programmes arranged by Denis Stevens
The art of the Tudor organists (like that of the Elizabethan madrigalists several generations later) flowered, came to fruition, and faded in a remarkably short space of time. Before the reign of Henry VIII there seems to have been very little organ music in England, and after the Reformation the organ was used more as an ornament to the liturgy than as an actual part of it. This series of programmes will show that the contribution of the Tudor organists to the church music of their time was essentially of a solo nature, not an accompaniment. The composers represented held office not only in London but at York Minster, Waltham Abbey, St. George's Chapel (Windsor), and Winchester Cathedral. Denis Stevens
Talk by Ivor Gowan
Lecturer in Public Administration,

Reviewing Great Cities of the World, edited by Professor W. A. Robson, Mr. Gowan considers some of the problems of local government in the modern metropolis. ' The crux of the matter,' he argues, ' is that the great city is the centre of power, the focal point of many forces of our national life. Can this centre of power also be given adequate local government? '
