Readers of Proust are familiar with the figure of the formidable Baron de Charlus. The fact that he had once been married may easily escape notice. There is, however, one reference to the late Mme. de Charlus in Part 2 of The Guermantes Way. In this evening's programme the history of the marriage of M. de Charlus is at length revealed.

Conducted by André Jouve on gramophone records This Mass by Charpentier (1634-1704) is based on old French Noels, all of which would have been well known to the congregation. At two points in the score the composer merely noted that ' Here the organ plays the same Noel '; for this performance the editor, Antoine Geoffroy Dcchaume, has chosen some settings of the tunes by Charpentier's contemporary, Nicolas le Begue.
