Schumann's Introduction and Allegro appassionato (or Concertstuck) was written in 1849 at Kreischa, where he and his family took refuge during the political disturbances in Dresden. The work has been unjustly neglected in favour of the Piano Concerto, completed four years earlier. Although certain of its themes may suggest Mendelssohn, who had died shortly before, their treatment, is characteristic of Schumann; and the work, besides offering opportunities for brilliance on the part of the soloist, has a warmth and an intimate quality that are very appealing.
Tonight's performance takes its place in the present series devoted to Schumann's orchestral works; on November 19 his Third Symphony will be broadcast. (H.R.)
