Annees de Pelerinage
Premiere Annee: Chapelle de Guillaume Tell: Au lac de Wallenstadt; Pastorale: Au bord d une source: Orage; Vallee d'Obermann: Eglogue; Le mal du pays; Les cloches de Geneve played by Joseph Weingarten (piano)
This is the first of three recitals in which Joseph Weingarten will play Liszt's three volumes of piano pieces entitled Annies de Pelerinage. The first, the Swiss volume, and the second, the Italian volume (together with its supplement Venezia e Napoli) were both published in the eighteen-fifties, though they are made up, for the most part, of pieces written and published during Liszt's tours of Switzerland and Italy some ten years before. The third volume, which has no special title, consists mainly of pieces written during the years 1867-77, when Liszt was living at the Villa d'Este in Rome; it was published in 1883. In the Swiss volume, to be heard to-night, all the pieces, with the exception of 'Orage' and 'Eglogut,' appeared originally in the earlier publication, Album d'un Voyageur; though before including them in the Annies de Pelerinage Liszt expanded and revised them considerably, paying particular attention to the subtilisation of the piano texture.
