John F. Campbell (1822-85) was regarded by his contemporaries asan eccentric. As a result of his friendship with G. W. Dasent, who was responsible for English translations of traditional Norwegian folk tales, Campbell decided to find out if such stories existed in Scotland. Together with helpers he gathered a mass of stories, and a selection was published in tihe four volumes of his Popular Tales of the West Highlands.
