Thomas Gray 's Elegy in a Country Churchyard was published in the early months of 1751. The story of its first appearance is unusual and forms a curious episode in the literary history of the eighteenth century. R. W. Ketton-Cremer has had occasion to investigate the facts while preparing his biography of the poet.
