The worship of the god Mithras was widely diffused through the Roman world by the third century A-D. In Britain the cult was known on Hadrian's Wall, and in 1822 a Mithraic chapel was found at Housesteads, near Newcastle upon Tyne. In 1949 a new shrine was seen near Carrawburgh, and last year this was fully investigated. Professor Richmond describes what was found and discusses its relation to the Milhraic cult.
