D'Arcy Cresswell , New Zealand author and poet, is going to talk about the unusual features of wild life in New Zealand. As New Zealand has been from time immemorial cut off from contact with the other continents, its wild life has developed along unusual lines. Until immigrants brought livestock with them there were hardly any native mammals, and no birds that could fly.
Recently various animals and birds have been imported, but in the main New Zealand is still, as D'Arcy Cresswell describes it, a land of queer life.

Ortho Penhale is off on his travels again. His secret marriage to Nicola Barradale , and her losing her reason even before it was announced, seemed at first to doom him to spending the rest of his life farming Bosula ; but a sudden windfall in the form of a French schooner that had been taken by the last of Barradale's ships before she sank herself, changed the whole outlook for him.
Barradale being dead, the ship became Ortho's, and, after secretly learning navigation he fitted her out for the African trade and sailed her away.

Sonata in G minor for violoncello and pianoforte

Most of John Ireland's chamber works were written before and during the war. His most important work since that time is the cello sonata in G minor, which was composed in 1923 and published the following year. It is supposed to have been written for Beatrice Harrison, the well-known cellist.
The form and general structure of the work shows a greater conciseness and concentration than that of his earlier works. In the third movement there is a close affinity to the themes of the first movement, in which they are introduced by the cello at the beginning.
