Ortho Penhale's secret marriage to Nicola Barradale failed immediately, because before he had time to announce it and bring her to Bosula, she lost her reason from the shock of hearing of her father's suicide. He was a British merchant of substance who did not insure his ships and suddenly found himself penniless through the last of them being lost in close succession.
Ortho was in two minds whether to announce the marriage after all, or not ; he decides to do so and takes home Nicola, who has now the mind of a small child. This instalment shows him trying to work out a new way of life on this basis.
