A commentary-on the race by Thomas Woodrooffe with a race reader from Ascot Racecourse
The Gold Cup, instituted in 1807 and run every year since except for the war years, 1915 to 1918, is one of the most coveted trophies in the world. The runners start at the Cup Post, make a circuit of the right-handed course (which is slightly downhill for roughly the first half and slightly uphill for roughly the second half) and finish at the winning post opposite the Royal Enclosure. Thus they twice pass the stands.
It is not the longest race at Ascot
(Brown Jack 's Queen Alexandra Stakes , run on the Friday is two furlongs longer), but 2 1/2 miles at Ascot is far enough to test any stayer. It is an international race, open to entire colts and fillies, of any age over two years. Three-year-olds carry 7 st. 7 lb. ; four-year-olds 9 st. ; five, six, and aged, 9 st. 4 lb. -mares being allowed 3 lb.
Wilhelm Backhaus (pianoforte):
Three Waltzes, Op. 39, Nos. 1, 2, and 15 (Brahms)
Moriz Rosenthal (pianoforte):
Waltz in A flat, Op. 72 (Chopin)
Eileen Joyce (pianoforte): Waltz in E (Moszkowski)
Ernst von Dohnanyi (pianoforte):
Waltz, Schatz (Johann Strauss , arr. Dohnanyi)
Making the most of your Looks
Holiday Hints
Mary Embrey
Last year, in October, Mary Embrey broke new ground by beginning for the first time in this country a series of broadcast talks to women on making the most of their looks. This proved one of those successful series that just goes on. Mary Embrey 's regular weekly feature, which she introduced in the London Morning Post five years ago, drew more correspondence than any women's-page feature had ever done before.
Now is the time when women are beginning to go on their holidays-the time when they want to look their best. All who can should tune in to listen to Mary Embrey 's holiday hints.
