A commentary on the race by R. C. Lyle at the Grand Stand and Richard North at the start from Gosforth Park, Newcastle-upon-
Tyne
The Northumberland Plate, or ' Pitman's Derby ', is one of the most popular long-distance handicaps in the North. It is worth 1,500 sovs. to the winner ; the second gets 150 sovs., and the third 75 sovs. The race is run on the Round Course at Gosforth Park, where the Newcastle races are held, and as the course is left-handed the low numbers in the draw are best. The distance is two miles.
This race, which was one of the great ante-post betting events in days of old when many a coup was planned,. was won last year by Nectar II from Signature and Weathervane. First and second, with many another fine stayer, are in the race again.
R. C. Lyle will be stationed at the Grand Stand, and Richard North at the starting ga,te. Something of the history of the Northumberland Plate and the people associated with it will be told to listeners on the Northern wavelength at 6.40 this evening.
