Except for a handful of overtures, such as ' Oberon' and Der Freischiitz, Weber's music is almost unknown to the present-day generations of listeners. Yet among his instrumental compositions are two piano concertos, four piano sonatas, and ten sets of variations for piano. It has been claimed that his four sonatas (in C, A flat, D minor, and E minor) are fit to be compared with the sonatas of Beethoven. Spitta suggests that this is an exaggeration, for although Weber's actual ideas are no doubt equally original they are not so varied, nor is his sense of form so logical, as Beethoven's.
Weber's sonatas, says Spitta, ' are rather fantasias in sonata form, and their very irregularities give them a kind of air of improvisation, which is their chief charm. Each has its distinctive character consistently maintained throughout.'

Dohnanyi's Sonata in C sharp minor, Op. 21, was published in 1913. The first movement is noticeably Brahmsian.
The second movement is in a form of which Dohnanyi has always been fond: a scherzo laid out in variations. This scherzo harks back in one place to the first movement ; the C sharp-D sharp-E motto of the first movement opens the finale ; and the end of the finale also harks back-to the beginning of the first movement. But the Sonata as a whole is a spiritual unity which could easily have dispensed with such devices to clamp it together.
