The Furnivalls Challenge Cup for Children's Jumping Ponies
A commentary during the event by Major G. Phipps-Hornby from the Old Deer Park, Richmond
The Furnivalls Champion Challenge Cup, presented by R. D. Blair , Esq., will be competed for by 1st and 2nd Prize Winners in Classes 15 and 16. In class 15 children must not have attained their thirteenth birthday on June 10. 1938, and must ride ponies not exceeding 13.2 hands. In Class 16 the age limit for the rider is extended to fifteen years, and the height of the pony to 14.2 hands and the jumps are correspondingly higher. Thus if the Challenge Cup is won by the first or second in Class 15, it is an additional triumph.
Thomas Woodrooffe, who is to share the commentary with Major Geoffrev Phipps-Hornby, has poignant recollections of the Old Deer Park, for the Royal Horse Show is held on the Rugby ground where, in 1917, playing for the Navy on leave against the New Zealanders, he lost two teeth.
