Elgar's Serenade in E minor no doubt owes a good deal of its effective use of the strings to the composer's intimate knowledge of the violin, and his youthful experience as conductor of a local band of modest size and attainment. It is certainly written with superb understanding of the expressive and colouristic qualities of the strings.
Delius's opera Irmelin was composed in 1890-2 and throughout his life it remained in manuscript and, as far as can be ascertained, never received a performance.
The libretto by Delius himself is based on a fairy tale which, according to Philip Heseltine , is ' dramatically rather below the level of the conventional operatic text. Though the music was much praised by Grieg and Messager at the time of its coraposition, its performance was never seriously contemplated by the composer '. -
