A PIANOFORTE RECITAL

Joseph Holbrooke , who was born at Croydon in 1878, studied composition at the Royal Academy of Music under Frederick Corder , and piano under Westlake. He began his career as a conductor and pianist, but soon forsook such activities to devote himself entirely to composition. During the first decade of the present century Holbrooke did much fine propaganda on behalf of British music, and his own contribution was both important and considerable in the way of operas, symphonic poems, and chamber music. Furthermore, in addition to the two concertos, one for violin and the other, which has the title of ' Song of Gwyn ap Nudd ', for piano, he has written a number of small piano pieces, of which the present programme includes a selection.

Count Alfred A. Hessenstein 
Last week in the first of four talks in this series, Count Hessenstein gave personal and family remembrances of Hungary. Today he is to give remembrances of Wagner at Bayreuth and Munich. His sister Evelyne married the eldest son of Mathilde Wesendonck , Wagner's friend and hostess at Zurich during his exile from Germany. His fondness for her inspired Tristan and Isolde. Long after the death of Wagner and Mathilde Wesendonck Count Hessenstein's brother-in-law and his family continued to entertain close and friendly relations with 'the Wagner family. His brother-in-law and his sister had for years their permanent box in Bayreuth and rarely missed a Wagner festival season.

Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1 in B flat minor was composed during November-December 1874, the orchestration being completed early in February the following year. 
Tchaikovsky, however, revised it, particularly the piano part in 1889, when it was first performed in England at a Philharmonic Concert under the direction of the composer with Sapellnikov as the soloist, and it has since become one of the most popular of all piano concertos.

Among Tchaikovsky's papers in his old home at Klin (now a museum), with other notes and sketches relating to his last works, a sheet of music paper has recently come to light with the following notes scribbled in pencil: 'The ultimate essence of the plan of the symphony is LIFE. First part-all impulsive passion, confidence, thirst for activity. Must be short. (Finale DEATH - result of collapse.) .)' 
Admittedly this rough draft does not quite agree with the final version of the ' Pathetic ', but we can hardly doubt that it is the embryonic plan of it and that this is the solution of the enigma of Tchaikovsky's mysterious secret programme of his ' Pathetic ' Symphony.
