Within the last year or two Constant Lambert has proved himself to be one of the foremost of British conductors. Among his triumphs to be specially noted were his conducting of the BBC Symphony Orchestra in the first performance of his work, ' Summer's Last Will and Testament ', his concerts with the Halle and Royal Philharmonic Societies, and his conducting of the BBC Orchestra at a Sunday Orchestral Concert last season. France, Italy, and Czechoslovakia have also acclaimed his gifts as a conductor. In addition to his public concerts, Lambert is well known to listeners as a studio conductor, and his remarkable freshness of outlook and knowledge of the out-of-the-way nooks and crannies of music are shown in his programmes, which are notable for the revival of so many neglected first-rate works of the past and present.

Here is an amusing burlesque which offers' to the listener a perfect solution of war. But then it couldn't have happened if the commanders-in-chief on both sides had not been to the same public school. As it was, they were able to dine together once a week, to advance and retire without casualities, and to send cooked casuality lists home to show that war was going on. Indeed So pleasant was it all that the war might have gone on for ever if the minister of war for one of the countries engaged had not visited the front and learned the truth. How he received it plays a great part in this clever play. Tin Soldiers was originally given at the Arts Theatre under the title of An Experiment in Paper Work and is to be published under the title of The Pen is Mightier-.
