This feature has been broadcast every Wednesday since the beginning of the year, the idea being to let home listeners hear a talk, or possibly two, of general interest that have already been given in the Empire programmes. The talker himself sometimes comes again to the microphone ; more usually the talks are recorded. They may cover any subject of interest under the sun.
Leader, Daniel Melsa
Conductor, Eric Fogg
The libretto of Massenet's opera, Le Cid, which was produced in Paris in 1885, is partly based upon Corneille's famous tragedy of the same name. The dramatic action has a Spanish background and the seven numbers of which the ballet consists are all picturesque national dances:
1. Castillane (Moderato: not too slow, 6-8). 2. Andalouse (Moderato, 2-4). 3. Aragonaise (Rather animated and very brilliant, 6-8). 4. Aubade (March rhythm, gay and rather animated, 2-4). 5. Catalane (Rather animated, 2-4). 6. Madrilene (Rather slow and melancholy, 9-8). 7. Navarraise (Rather animated and very brilliant, 3-4).
Most of the above dances, it will be noticed, bear the names of the provinces in which they are popular.
