Beethoven's Overture, ' Prometheus ', is the prelude to a ballet, the music of which Beethoven composed for a famous ballet master and choreographer in Vienna named Vigano. The scenario supplied to Beethoven was an innocuous version of the classic myth, for Prometheus is here represented not as stealing fire from the heavens, but as bringing his statues to life with the aid of dancing, drama, and music.
Haydn's B major Symphony, No. 46, is a spirited little work dating from 1772, the same year as the 'Farewell' and 'Maria Theresa' symphonies. Scored for a small orchestra of two oboes, two horns, and strings, it is an excellent specimen of typical Haydn. Admittedly it is not to be compared with the last twelve splendid 'Salomon' symphonies, written more than twenty years later, but it has its own charm and its own strength. It is as deliciously melodious as anything even Haydn ever wrote, and its musical craftsmanship is superb.

at the Organ of the Ritz Cinema, Belfast

It was association with two other famous broadcasting organists, Reginald Dixon and Reginald New, that led Joseph Seal to take up the cinema organ in 1933, when he was only twenty years of age. He had had plenty of organ-playing experience before that, however, for he was learning at the age of thirteen, and in a few months was appointed organist to St. Cuthbert's Church, Darwen, Lancashire. After playing for twelve months at the Regal Cinema, Altrincham, he went to the Lonsdale Cinema, Carlisle, where he got the idea for his Cumberland signature tune 'D'ye ken John Peel?'. After leaving Carlisle, he went to the Ritz, Belfast, from where he has already broadcast about seventy times.
Seal's popular arrangement of 'Song Hits, Past and Present', a regular feature of his programmes, brings him a fan mail that takes most of his spare time to answer.

The Aston Hippodrome Orchestra has now been on the air for many months. Its leader is Norris Stanley of the Norris Stanley Sextet, and its pianist Harry Engleman of the Quintet of that name. Ivan Hucker by, conductor of the orchestra, has had a baton in his hand from the age of ten, when he conducted his own amateur orchestra. As a youngster he was a regular ' promenader ', and completed his conductor's course under Sir Henry Wood. He gained much of his experience in a two-year tour of the country with music-hall shows, thereafter holding resident posts at Blackpool and Douglas. Isle of Man.

Listeners' Request Night with The BBC Theatre Orchestra

' Saturday at Nine-Forty ' started in January, and has been fairly regular ever sincf. During these concerts the BBC Theatre Orchestra have proved their versatility, for they have played in programmes ranging from revue to grand opera. According to listeners' letters these concerts seem to have been extremely popular -in particular the Listeners' Request Programmes, of which tonight's is the fourth. So many requests arrived that it was necessary to select those items which had the majority of votes.
For tonight's concert the Theatre
Orchestra has been augmented, and their programme will contain what are often referred to as ' popular classics '.
