with Webster Booth
Charles Ernesco studied the violin at the Guildhall School of Music under Max Mossel and got his first engagement at the age of twenty as an extra in the London Symphony Orchestra at the Leeds Festival of 1925. For five or six years he played at Covent Garden during the International Season. Then in 1934 he formed his popular Quintet, which still consists of its original members.
His vocalist, Webster Booth , is also no stranger to Covent Garden ; as the tenor in Der Rosenkavalier last year, he scored a remarkable success. He is equally at home in concert-party work and in Handel, and listeners will specially remember his fine singing in such radio opera productions as Lakme and Hugh the Drover.

★ by Leo Tolstoy 16, 'Pierre faces the firing squad '
A serial reading by Eric Gillett
Pierre had stayed behind in Moscow in disguise. Brooding on the fate of Russia, he decided that he must sacrifice his own life in some desperate act to save his country. Napoleon was to make a ceremonial entry into Moscow on the morning of September 3, 1812 ; Pierre decided to assassinate him. Unfortunately (and characteristically) he overslept. The fires are spreading.

A programme in praise of rhythm with Ben Frankel and his Orchestra
Dorothy Carless
The Rhythm Brothers and the dancing feet of Buddy Bradley
Like a good many other musicians, Ben Frankel had to face strong parental opposition when he wished to make music his profession. After a false start in business, he studied the piano under Victor Benham and got a job as pianist in a dance orchestra at the Wembley Exhibition during its first year.
He exchanged the piano for a fiddle (in Jack Howard 's Band at Olympia), and later got engagements with Elizalde and Carroll Gibbons.
Since leaving Carroll Gibbons ,
Frankel has confined himself to orchestrating, composing, and conducting. He has arranged for Henry Hall and orchestrated the music of numerous West-End shows, including Operette, I Can Take It, The Melody that got Lost, Under your
Hat, and most of Frances Day's shows, and he arranged and conducted the popular radio series, ' The Song is Ended ', ' Rhythm Express ', and ' This Thing Called Jazz

8.59 Prelude and Isolda's Death
Song (Tristan and Isolde)..Wagner
This arrangement of the opening Prelude and the final scene from Tristan and Isolda was sanctioned, and a purely instrumental version made, by Wagner himself. Isolda has hastened across the sea to the mortally wounded Tristan, only to witness his death in her arms. She sings, in the Liebestod of her longing to follow him into the beyond and sinks lifeless across his body.
