★ by Leo Tolstoy 16, 'Pierre faces the firing squad '
A serial reading by Eric Gillett
Pierre had stayed behind in Moscow in disguise. Brooding on the fate of Russia, he decided that he must sacrifice his own life in some desperate act to save his country. Napoleon was to make a ceremonial entry into Moscow on the morning of September 3, 1812 ; Pierre decided to assassinate him. Unfortunately (and characteristically) he overslept. The fires are spreading.
