A programme of gramophone records presented by Alec Robertson
Few audiences are as enthusiastic as those found at the opera, particularly in the cheaper parts of the house. But in this country, outside London at any rate, opportunities for going to the opera are few and far between, if existent at all. It is therefore specially to the many scattered lovers of opera that this series of six programmes ' Nights at the Opera ' is addressed.
Alec Robertson , who is presenting these programmes, cherishes a lifelong passion for opera. In his first programme he will speak of preludes and overtures and recall preliminary thrills before the rise of the curtain. The curtain will be up for the second talk and the stage waiting for the entrance of principals. The four remaining talks of the series will be concerned with solo arias, love duets and death scenes (in which opera abounds!), concerted music for the principals and chorus, and entr'actes. For the most part the pieces will be taken from the established repertoire, but there will be a novelty or two.

' I can't see the use of a lot of the subjects they teach my boy. They won't help him to get a job. What's the point of it ? ' 'I wonder if it's worth sending my daughter to the secondary school. Her teachers say she'll get a scholarship, but I'd like to know how much it will cost me all told, and what she'll get out of it'.
These are the sort of questions that parents are always asking and which, in this series, they can put to an expert-and get them answered.
The editor of the series, W. E.
Williams, is the secretary of the British Institute of Adult Education, editor of Highway, and author of a number of books on education.
