The famous detective Hercule Poirot appeared in Agatha Christie 's first novel, "The Mysterious Affair at Styles", which she wrote (in response to a challenge) when she was working as a Red Cross nurse during the war, and is still going strong in her latest novel, "Death on the Nile". "The Incredible Theft" is a story in the volume of her stories, "Murder in the Mass."
Poirot was immortalised in the flesh by Charles Laughton in the play "Alibi". The little Belgian detective has also been featured in a radio musical play, "The Yellow Iris", and Francis Sullivan played the same part in a television show. For today's production, that popular broadcasting personality, E. M. Stephan, is taking part in a play for the first time in his life, and the part should suit him to perfection.

This is the first of a new series of readings by Eric Gillett from the works of modem British, travellers. Some of the many travel books published in the last few years are among the most interesting literature of our time. This afternoon Eric Gillett will read from books in which Peter Fleming describes his adventures in two continents: ' News from Tartary ' ' Brazilian Adventure ', and 1 One's Company '. In later talks, which will be given weekly, he hopes to draw upon the work of Somerset Maugham, E. M. Delafield , Evelyn Waugh , H. M. Tomlinson , and others.

The relation of the modern poet to the vast reading public of today is the subject of examination in this new series that was introduced by Humphrey Jennings a fortnight ago. It is computed that there are about forty million people in Great Britain ; nearly all these read newspapers, many of them magazines and books, but it is not clear how many, or how few, read poetry.
Last week Humphrey Jennings discussed the poet and the public in the past. Today he and ' a man in the street' are to discuss poetry and the ordinary reader of today.
