@ The First Day
A commentary by Stewart MacPherson from the Empire Pool and Sports Arena , Wembley
This annual race started at midnight yesterday, May 1, and is due to finish at 11 p.m. next Saturday, May 7. There will be three broadcast commentaries by Stewart MacPherson-the first this afternoon, the second on Wednesday (Regional) at 3.25, and the third on Saturday (National) at 10.50—the last covering the result of the race.
A specially banked track has been constructed over the Wembley Pool ; and MacPherson will convey to listeners something of the unusual atmosphere.
A technical word which may often be used in the commentaries may perhaps need explaining-the word ' jam '. This means that both riders of a team join in and endeavour to steal a lap on the rest of the field. A ' jam ' may start at any time. Frequently at the most unexpected moment when the field is loafing round the track. This naturally puts sudden life into the race and makes for excitement.
