DORIS L. MACKINNON
In this opening broadcast of the term, Doris Mackinnon will describe the wonderful railway journey through a tunnel twelve miles long under the Alps, from the winter of Switzerland into the spring of Northern Italy.
A salient feature of her talk is the blessing in disguise it has been for the big towns of Italy that Italy has no coal. Electric power, drawing its strength from the hills along the lines of the great electric cables, runs everything, from trains to factories.

Written for broadcasting by EDITH E. MACQUEEN , Ph.D.
It is good news that once again you are to hear more of ' Our Village 'the village of Stanwellstead, which must be as well known to you as any village in England. Today you are to hear your old friend Gaffer Brown , who has a voice extraordinarily like F. H. Grisewood 's, discussing things of the garden, with an eye on the flower show to be held on June 23. He will be exchanging ideas over the hedge with ' Old Henry '-that old friend of C. H. Middleton 's. Many of you may wonder if Middleton will be listening.

Here is the story of the compere, who originated in the music-hall chairman of olden times. Very few of the latter still exist, but one at least has been found and will come to the microphone-George Helton , who is over 80 and who broadcast in ' In Town Tonight' a week or two ago.
An ideal compere of the early days of compering was the famous Harry Pelissier of ' The Follies' which flourished before the war. Something will be heard of him, and it is of interest that his son, Anthony Pelissier , is presenting the Pelissier Follies of 1938 next week at the Saville Theatre. London.
Listeners 'will also hear something about Balieff, the compere of the Chauve Souris , who specialised in broken English.
