Stories that are History ' Christopher Columbus'

Christopher Columbus was born in either 1446 or 1451 and died in 1506. He persuaded Ferdinand and Isabella of Spain to finance an expedition of discovery, and set out on his first voyage in 1492. He discovered the Bahamas, Cuba, and other islands in the West Indies, and on his third voyage he landed on the lowlands of South America.
The first episode in this dramatic interlude will show Columbus raising money at the court of Isabella ; the second episode will show his arrival in the West Indies ; and the third episode, his return and triumph. The part of Christopher Columbus will be broadcast by John Abbott.

Fishes can hear. This has been found out by training Dshes to swim forward when musical notes are p)ayed. A note is played each time that food is given, and after a time the fish comes to the note alone. Dogs can distinguish more notes than humans can, and they can hear higher notes than we are able to hear. Grasshoppers make their noises by rubbing their wings. These are some of the things that Munro Fox will discuss in this first broadcastoftheterm.

Beethoven himself spoke of his Eighth Symphony as the 'Little Symphony in F', and as one of which he was particularly fond, perhaps for the reason that it is in spirit the brightest of the whole nine.
Tchaikovsky once wrote an analysis of this symphony, from which we quote: 'It is the fast bright smile, the fast response given by the poet of human sorrows and hopeless despair to the voice of gladness..... It is fitted with a spirit of serene content and unrestrained joy. It depicts the gentle, earthly delights of humanity before the soul is distracted by evil, doubt, and despair.'
In this symphony Beethoven's ever delightful humour appears at its most puckish.

Dream Children...Elgar

After reading Charles Lamb's 'Dream Children' from the 'Essays of l, Elgar was moved to compose two orchestral pieces which he entitled 'Dream Children'. The two pieces illustrate the mood of the following passage: 'And while I stood gazing, both the children gradually grew fainter to my view, receding, and still receding, till nothing at last but two mournful features were seen in the uttermost distance, which, without speech, strangely impressed upon me the effects of speech: "We are not children of Alice, nor of thee, nor are we children at all... We are nothing; less than nothing, and dreams. We are only what might have been."'

Professor Scott-Watson is to bring to the microphone Mr. H.W. Tomlinson, who is a member of the Wiltshire County Agricultural staff. Mr. Tomlinson has for several years been making a close study of sheep management and particularly of the production of grass-fed lamb. They will discuss together this important branch of farming.
