Joseph Jongen , the Belgian composer, was born at Liege in 1873. He studied at the Liege Conservatoire, where he was Professor of Harmony from 1901-1920, when he went to the Brussels Conservatoire as Professor of Fugue and Counterpoint. After five years he was appointed Principal. In his early works, written between 1902 and 1914, such as the Trio in B minor, Jongen shows the deep influence of Cesar Franck.

Alec Rowley and Edgar Moy
It is said that the piano duet originated with Mozart. Most of the great composers have written works for this medium, and today there is a considerable repertoire of first-rate original works for four hands. In Germany and in France piano duet playing has always held an important place in home music making, and publishers find it necessary to issue most big symphonic works in special arrangements for piano duet.
For classical music the piano duet is an ideal medium, but in modern works, particularly those that rely for their effect essentially on the orchestral colouring, much is lost in transcribing such music for the keyboard.
So far as the radio is concerned,
Alec Rowley and Edgar Moy were practically the first to give programmes of piano duet music.

by Lord Dunsany
It needs the imaginative mind of Lord Dunsany to create a character like Mr. Jorkens-a man who would always tell a tale for a drink. Whether his tales were true is another matter ; they were certainly convincing, and his method of going through life was altogether ingenious. They owe, of course, a very great deal to the setting the author gives them in 'The Travel Tales of Mr. Joseph Jorkens ', of which the story he is to broadcast tonight is the fourth of thirteen tales.
' The Charm against Thirst' is characteristic. Did Mr. Jorkens, walking westward up the Strand on a warm summer's day, with a thirst and no money with which to quench it, invent the whole thing ? Anyhow, he swung the charm at the end of his watch-chain for everyone to see, much as an angler spins something bright in the water to catch a fish. The fish Mr. Jorkens caught was, of course, Lord Dunsany-and listeners should be grateful that he did.
