Quartet No. 2, La oracion del torero
(The Toreador's Prayer) .... Turina
In dimensions ' The Toreador's Prayer Quartet is a minor work of the Spanish composer, Joaquin Turina , whose chamber music marks him as perhaps the most important composer of that form of writing today in Spain. The subject, however, ' The Toreador's Prayer ', is a picturesque one. Attached to every bull-ring in Spain is a private chapel for the use of bull-fighters. A toreador before he makes his entrance into the ring enters this chapel and offers up a prayer for his success and safe return. This is a solemn ritual in the dangerous life of the bull-fighter and one that he never misses. This short movement, which was originally written for four lutes, is a musical interpretation of a moving moment.

PEGGY COCHRANE (violin)
A successful novelty instrumental combination that has been introduced over the microphone is Frank Biffo 's Quintet, which consists of two trumpets, two trombones, and piano. Frank Biffo, who conducts his Quintet, is himself a well-known trumpet soloist who was once a member of the original Savoy Orpheans. The pianist and arranger is Guy Fletcher , who has had a wide experience of theatre orchestras and dance bands. The first trumpet is George Chappell , who was first with the Grenadier Guards, then Foden's Prize Band, and finally with Muscant's Orchestra. The second trumpet is Erid Todd , who comes from Manchester, where he started as a member of the ' Besses o' th' Barn ' band, and later played with Al Davison 's Orchestra and Van Dam 's Trocadero Orchestra.
The first trombone is Tony Mangan , who, in addition to playing with a number of London dance orchestras, was once a member of the Belfast Wireless Orchestra. His colleague is Stanley Wilson , who for many years played the trombone in the Scots Guards.

'Seen from the Bridge'

In the last two talks Lord Essendon and Mr. Leslie Runciman have described the running of liners and tramps from the shipowner's angle. Tonight, Captain J. F. Webster will discuss the same subject from the standpoint of the senior officer and master.
Captain Webster served a four-years' apprenticeship in a four-masted barque, and spent eighteen months as second mate in Elder Dempster steamers. He then obtained his first mate's certificate and joined a steamer running between New York and the East. He left her in 1915 to join the Navy. After the war he joined the Blue Funnel Line, and has been with it ever since.
He has just returned from a voyage begun last November from Liverpool to New Orleans and th-n from Galveston with a cargo of cotton for Japan ; then down to the Philippine Islands, where he started loading homewards, and discharging the cargo at Havre and Liverpool.

Enrique Granados (1867-1916), one of the most gifted of Spanish composers, was also a conductor and a brilliant virtuoso pianist. He composed only a few major works, but numerous short piano pieces of a distinctive grace, charm, and national colour. In January, 1916, Granados's. opera Goyescas, which is based on his own series of piano pieces of the same title, which are musical illustrations of scenes from the paintings and tapestries of Goya, was produced at the Metropolitan Opera House, New York. On his return to Spain in March, he lost his life on the ill-fated Sussex, which was torpedoed by a German submarine.
