' The Nature of Public Opinion '
The Lord ELTON This is the first of six weekly talks by Lord Elton. He will discuss the nature of public opinion by first of all attempting the difficult task of defining it.
Interesting points are involved. Has public opinion, for instance, grown more powerful during the last century ? Or wiser ? And what causes have contributed to its development ? In what way has it been related to the fortunes of parties and statesmen? Part of Lord Elton's talk will be devoted to exposing the old fallacy that public opinion is always divided on a political issue.
Three questions suggest themselves for Discussion Groups : How is public opinion best defined ? Does it necessarily correspond with Party divisions in politics ? And why, during any one period, does public opinion, on politics and other matters, tend to assume one pattern ?
