'Danse macabre'
Saint-Saens's 'Danse macabre' describes a scene in a graveyard at night; the clock strikes and Death appears, knocks on the graves, and starts tuning his fiddle. In answer to his summons, several skeletons appear and; dance wildly to ;Death's fiddling. Presently the cock crows, the dance ceases, and all disappear as day breaks.
Henry Litolff (181 8-1 891) was the son of a French soldier who came to England from the Peninsula as a prisoner of war, and married an English lady. He first appeared in public at the age of twelve as a child prodigy pianist, and then for a number of years travelled extensively as a concert pianist. Eventually, he settled in Paris and devoted himself largely to composition, producing several operas, a good deal of symphonic music, and many pianoforte pieces, some of which are still played.

This afternoon Mr. Gaddum is to discuss the awakening of the hive and the first signs of activity ; the functions of the different members of the bee community ; swarming ; the birth of the new princess ; the collection and storage of honey ; the massacre of the drones ; the preparation for the winter sleep.
Teachers will find it helpful to have specimens or illustrations of a beehive, a queen bee, a working bee, a drone, and, if possible, a section of honeycomb to show their class.

Eduard Steuermann studied the piano under Busoni and composition under Schdnberg. He made his first appearance with an orchestra in England at a Promenade Concert in 1931. His interests as a pianist are catholic in that he includes in his repertoire all the great piano music from Bach to Bartok, and he is considered one of the outstanding interpreters of contemporary music. '
It is interesting to note that although Mr. Steuermann shows such a live interest in the extreme moderns, he has also edited an edition of the complete piano works of Brahms.

' Running the Ship : Liners '
Lord ESSENDON
Lord Essendon, who is Chairman of the Furness Withy Line and of the Royal Mail, and a Director of the Cunard White Star Line, has been connected with the shipping industry for over fifty years. And listeners will find in his talk not only an intimate knowledge of the tiniest detail of ships afloat, but almost a lyric love of these ships.
He will describe the evolution of the liner from a ship which Dr. Johnson said was far less comfortable than gaot into the luxurious floating hotel and railway it is today. The planning oft he ship, its construction, the concern for the safety of passengers and crew, the difficulties of catering, cargo, the infinitesimal cost of freight, the economic difficulties of our times, the skill, courage, and loyalty of the personnel-these among other things will be dealt with in Lord Essendon's talk.

In Act III of Puccini's Tosca Cavara dossi is seen writing a letter of farewell 'on the battlements of Sant' Angelo prison. He soliloquises over the past in the aria ' When the stars were brightly shining '. Tosca comes to explain that dummy bullets are to be used for the execution. The firing party take up their positions. Cavaradossi falls. Tosca gives the signal for him to get up, but the execution, unfortunately, is a real one.
Guards rush up to arrest Tosca for the murder of Scarpia. She pushes them aside and throws herself over the parapet.
