If for no other reason, this broadcast should be notable because it is the first time that the American national game has been broadcast by the BBC. The purpose of this twenty minutes is not so much to follow the progress of the match between Harringay and White City as to give listeners the general ' atmosphere ' of baseball.
The commentator is R. T. Bowman , a Canadian, who will be remembered for several previous sporting broadcasts, notably his running commentary on the last period of the Ice Hockey contests in the Olympic Games from Garmisch in February last. Besides being an expert on ice hockey, he played both baseball and cricket in Canada before he came to this country two years ago. An article by him, entitled ' Baseball Stories ', will be found on page I I.

In the past the playing of polo in England has been the privilege of the few. And until recent years it was the interest of the few. Nowadays the position is changed : thousands of people who are not rich can afford to ride, and it is the ambition of nearly every keen rider to handle a polo stick. This talk is of particular interest at the moment for this week the United States team, captained by R. E. Strawbridge , is in England preparing for the Westchester Cup contests. Three matches will be played, on June 10, 13, and 20, at Hurlingham Club, London. Offered for competition in 1886, the Cup has been won seven times by America, and four times by England. Until this year the matches have always been played in the country of the holders.

Alec Rowley 's ' The Walking Tune and Marching Tune' is a characteristic, well-orchestrated composition, the title of which adequately describes the music. The ' Hornpipe from a suite called ' Scenes of Old England', is by Percy Godfrey , a former music master of King's School, Canterbury. who has written many clever and original works.
Another new work is Gilbert Vinter 's
Suite, ' Lincoln Green '. The composer is a bassoon player in the BBC Military Band, was formerly a choir boy at Lincoln Cathedral under the late Dr. G. J. Bennett ; then a student at Kneller Hall , and later he won a scholarship at the Royal Academy of Music, where he studied composition under Corder and bassoon under Richard Newton. ' Lincoln Green ' consists of three short sketches of Robin Hood 's ' Merrie Men '.
