' Hereward the Wake '

It is one thing for a king to make a successful invasion of an enemy s country, but it is a larger order altogether for him to subdue it, to make the vanquished passively amenable to the conqueror's demands. Hereward the Wake's defiance of William the Conqueror is a case in point. In 1070
Hereward's followers joined forces with the Danes, whom William had allowed to winter in England, and sacked Peterborough Abbey. The rebels then retreated to Ely, and, despite the fact that the Danes deserted, managed to hold their refuge for several months.
Finally, Ely became such a formidable headquarters for outlaws that William launched a concentrated attack upon it. But Hereward the Wake, ' the last of the English ', as Charles Kingsley termed him, managed to make his escape through the marshes. This afternoon Rhoda Power will tell listeners all about the exploits of this romantic figure of early British history.

Haydn Fawcett is a member of the celebrated Yorkshire family of musicians who held the distinction of being one of the largest musical families in England. Each of them was named after a famous musician.
Haydn Fawcett , who studied the violin from the age of five, was a member of the Hallé Orchestra under Sir Hamilton Harty , and of the Queen's Hall Orchestra under Sir Henry Wood. He conducted the orchestra of twenty-five performers at the Hippodrome, Nottingham, for three years, and also the orchestra that opened the new Leicester Square Theatre, London.
He first broadcast with his light orchestra in July last year, and at once made a hit on the air. One of his first fiddles is Tschaikov, who came from Russia many years ago, has played in the Queen's Hall Orchestra, and has broadcast with his own Trio ; the other is Alfred Davis , who was Fawcett's leader in Leicester Square, and has played at Queen's Hall, and with the Russian Ballet at Covent Garden.

' Sugar Beet at Home and Abroad'

Tonight Professor Scott Watson will bring Mr. F. Rayns to the microphone to discuss ' Sugar Beet at Home and Abroad '. Mr. Rayns is Director of the Norfolk Agricultural Station at Sprowston, near Norwich, where a large amount of experimental work, both on the growth of the beet crop and on the utilisation of its by-products, has been carried out in recent years. Mr. Rayns has recently spent nearly two months in touring the chief sugar-beet areas on the Continent, under the auspices of the Beet Sugar Factories' Research Committee, to collect information of possible value to British growers. Tonight Mr. Rayns will give listeners the benefit of his own wide knowledge of sugar-beet problems and will discuss the lessons to be drawn from the most recent experiments both in this country and elsewhere.

Schumann's First Symphony
In September, 1840, Robert Schumann married Clara Wieck , and it was during this year that Schumann composed so many of his finest songs. Towards the end of December he began to work on his first Symphony. Clara records in her diary on January 25 ithat ' Today, Monday, Robert has about finished his symphony; it has been composed mostly at night-my poor Robert has spent some sleepless nights over it. He calls it " Spring Symphony ". A spring poem by ... gave the first impulse to the creation.' The missing name of the poet is Adolf Bottger. Fulfilment of Longing
In a letter to Spohr Schumann says : ' I have composed a symphony in the fulfilment of the longing that influences men until they grow aged-an emotion that surprises them every year. I do not wish to portray, to paint, but I believe firmly that the period at which the symphony was created influenced its form and character, and shaped it as it is.' At one time Schumann thought of giving each of the four movements a title, as follows : ' Coming of Spring ', ' Evening ', ' Merry Play-mates ', ' Full Spring '.
The Meaning of the Music
However, in a letter to a conductor he said : ' Try to inspire the orchestra with some of the longing for Spring that chiefly possessed me when I wrote the Symphony..... At the very beginning I should like the trumpets to sound as if from on high, like a call to awaken. In what follows of the introduction there might be a suggestion of the growing green of everything, even of a butterfly flying up, and in the allegro, of the gradual assembling of all that belongs to spring. But these are fancies that came to me after the completion of the work. Only of the last movement I will tell you that I like to think of it as Spring's Farewell, and that therefore I should not like it to be rendered frivolously.'
