Last week M. Stephen told listeners about the Breton Fishermen; today M. Vignon is to take them farther south, to the Department of Gironde, in the old Province of Aquitaine, where the city of Bordeaux is a flourishing port on the River Garonne. Many listeners may have heard of Bordeaux wines, of Medoc clarets, of a white wine called Sauterne. These, and others, are all made from grapes gathered in this district, and shipped from the port of Bordeaux to the world.

Last week Vernon Bartlett discussed foreign affairs, and today Sir William Beveridge, Principal of the London School of Economics, is to discuss economics. He will give two further talks on economics in this series, on November 22 and December 13 respectively.

This is the first talk in a new series in which some distinguished man of today will say something of the life and achievements of some distinguished man of yesterday, whom he personally knew. Tonight, H. G. Wells will talk from his own memories of Thomas Henry Huxley.
He was in Huxlev's class at the Normal School of Science (the Royal College of Science today). The great biologist was then ' a yellow-faced, square-faced old man, with bright little brown eyes, lurking as it were in caves under his heavy grey eyebrows, and a mane of grey hair brushed back from his wall of forehead '. Wells assesses him as a very great man. And listeners will be eager to hear this talk today about the man who taught and inspired Wells.

Betsy de la Porte came to the Royal College of Music in 1924 as an Overseas Scholar from the University of South Africa. After a year or two she obtained an Operatic Exhibition and remained a further two years at the Royal College of Music. Then she studied opera for two years in Germany. Three years ago Miss de la Porte joined the Sadler's Wells company and has since appeared at Covent Garden and Glyndebourne. She will appear in the production of Boris Godunov at the forthcoming Sadler's Wells season.
Etienne Amyot is also a South
African artist. Bom in 1909, he studied composition and piano until he was fifteen at the South African College of Music. Then he came to London and went to the Royal College of Music under Lloyd Powell, and afterwards to Berlin to finish with Karol Szreter.
