I am living near a bath; sounds are heard on all sides; just imagine for yourself every sort of noise that can offend the ear.' ... Something like that might be written of a modern open-air swimming pool by anyone today, but as a matter of tact it was written by Nero's tutor nearly two thousand years ago.
In this interlude Rhoda Power is to take listeners to a bath used by the Roman soldiers who garrisoned Hadrian's wall that ran across the North of England almost from the North Sea to the Irish Sea, and formed a barrier against raiding Picts. Listeners will hear two soldiers talking and joking together until something happens that gives them nothing to laugh about.

After the failure of his first Symphony in 1897 Rachmaninov got into such a morbid state of mind that, except for one short period of activity, he was unable to do any creative work. Finally, in January, 1900, Rachmaninov submitted himself to hypnotic treatment and he says : ' Although it may sound incredible, this cure really helped me. Already at the beginning of the summer I began again to compose. The material grew in bulk, and new musical ideas began to stir within me-far more than I needed for my concerto.' This was the Second Piano Concerto in C minor, which a year or two previously he had agreed to write for the London Philharmonic Society.

Professor Scott Watson has been giving the Farmers' talks since April. As a young man he studied under Professor Robert Wallace at Edinburgh University and took a degree in Agriculture. He studied for a year at the Royal Agricultural College, Berlin, and for a year in America, at Iowa State College of Agriculture. But he is more than a farmer in theory, 'he is a farmer in practice, managing on behalf of St.
John's College. Oxford, an arable farm of 480 acres at Long Wittenham, where he specialises in mechanised corn growing, pigs, and sheep.
Tonight Professor Scott Watson will review the outlook for the beef producer during the coming winter-feeding season and will discuss some possible ways of reducing the cost of bullock fattening.

Tonight the Rocky Mountaineers are off to the ' Huskin Bee.' Every year when the work of husking the ears from the cobs of corn is over and the grain is all stowed away for winter feeding, the homesteaders for a hundred niles around gather in the big red barn lor the ' Huskin Bee,' or barn dance. It's a merry time-especially as the lumberjacks are invited to provide the tun..... And when they are represented by such hundred per cent. Canadian personalities as Bill Campbell , and Al and Bob Harvey , and when the corporal in the Canadian Mounted Police is played by Gerry Fitzgerald , listeners may know that they are in for a rattling good entertainment.
This-is the fourth broadcast of the Rocky Mountaineers,' and the third in this series. It has proved so popular that there are to be at least two more broadcasts between now and Christmas.

One of the most important results of the development of the waltz in Vienna was its effect on light opera. A new style of operetta was evolved during the last quarter of the nineteenth century— a style that was a happy combination of the Viennese waltz and the gay and tuneful French opéra bouffe as represented by Offenbach. Johann Strauss led the way with numerous operettas, of which Die Fledermehts and Der Zigeunerbaron are notable examples. He was soon followed by a line of gifted composers, such as Suppe and Millocker, and later Heuberger, Franz Lehar , and Oscar Straus.
Suppe's opera overtures are well known to listeners. Suppe was for a time conductor at the Theater an der Wien, where in 1869 Millocker became conductor and composer. Among several highly successful operettas were his Gasparone and The Beggar Student, the latter achieving an international success. It was first produced in London at the Alhambra in 1884.
