In this new series of talks housewives in different parts of the country are to explain how they run their homes. They will describe their day's work, the husband's occupation, housekeeping allowance, and so forth. The idea being for young housewives to hear how experienced housekeepers run their homes, and even for experienced housekeepers to compare notes.
Budgets will be touched on ; and the spending of a sum when there are three in the family is a very different matter from the stretching of the same sum when there are six or seven. Listeners will hear about hours of work and hours of leisure (if any) ; about kitchens, and spring cleaning, and shopping, and hire purchase. The housewives who will come to the microphone are as differently placed as a glassblower's wife at St. Helens, a woman who takes in lodgers at Hythe, and a new London flat-dweller.
For the opening talk this morning a woman at Finchley who has to do everything for a household of twelve on a sum of money "never exceeding £4 10S. a week will explain the mystery of how she manages.

Beethoven's first publication, at the age of twenty-five, was a set of three pianoforte trios known as Opus i, of which this is the third. Beethoven himself must have thought well of it, for in 1810, twenty-four years later,
! he made out of this trio a string quintet for two violins, two violas and 'cello, calling the new arrangement Opus 104. I should like you to see ', he writes to Ferdinand Ries , ' the two enclosed works..... Taken to a publisher in London, they would sell easily for perhaps fifty ducats in gold '. One of these works was the quintet arrangement, but in point of fact there is some doubt as to whether the arrangement has reached London at all. at any rate so far as a public performance is concerned. Mr. W. W. Cobbett , who should know if anybody does, stated definitely a year or two ago that certainly in London the quintet had not then been performed here.
