The significance of this relay of Handel's music from the beautiful little church at Whitchurch is its association with Handel himself. From 1718 to 1721 Handel held the post of Kapellmeister to the notorious Earl of Carnarvon - later to become Duke of Chandos - who had made a great fortune, questionably, as Paymaster-General. Carnarvon had spent a huge sum of money on his estate of Cannons, near Edgware, and had, in addition, restored the existing, nearby Church of St. Lawrence, employing Grinling Gibbons for the carvings, Italian artists for the mural paintings, presenting Communion plate, and rebuilding the organ. More association with the Church has probably been attributed to Handel than was actually the fact, for the great man, when not actually carrying out his duties as Kapellmeister at Cannons, to which, not only a theatre, but a private chapel with its own organ was attached, must have been busy in London.
The organ at St. Lawrence has been enlarged from time to time since Handel played on it, but the Grinling Gibbons carved case and some of the pipes are still as they were then, and the original keyboard has been preserved.

PAUL DE MALEINGREAU , Belgian organist and composer, born in 1887, was a pupil of Edgar Tinel at the Brussels Conservatoire and later a professor-before and during a period covering the German occupation of the city. In those years he inaugurated a series of organ recitals in order to make the best organ music popularly known to his fellow citizens and to restore forgotten masterpieces to the repertory. This campaign he successfully continued after the War, one series of recitals having been devoted to the whole of Bach's works for the organ. As a composer he shows himself influenced, next to Bach, by Cesar Franck. He has written both for the pianoforte and the organ.

An appeal on behalf of THE MUSICIANS' BENEVOLENT FUND, by the Right Hon. LORD BLANESBURGH, G.B.E., K.C.
IN THIS COUNTRY today half the musical profession is out of work owing to the ' talkies ' and mechanical music. A large number of musicians will never obtain employment again, not only in their professional capacity, but in any capacity at all owing either to age or infirmity, or being unfitted for other jobs. Unless, therefore, the Musicians' Benevolent Fund can come to their aid in their declining years, these musicians have the hopeless outlook of ending their days in the infirmary or workhouse.
The Musicians' Benevolent Fund has taken on great obligations in respect of pensions alone for the sick, aged, and infirm members' of the musical profession. At the present time it has an overdraft of over £4,000, and this appeal to every listener this evening is to send a donation (however small) to help them in their Samaritan work. Over 63 per cent.' of the broadcast programmes (National and Regional) is provided by musicians.
