A Programme By
THE B.B.C. DANCE ORCHESTRA, directed by HENRY HALL
Personally, introduced by CHARLES B. COCHRAN
The greatest showman in England celebrates his sixtieth birthday tonight at the microphone. With him at this very distinguishedl party will be Henry Hall , who has made a special orchestral arrangement of representative tunes from the many shows Mr. Cochran has presented in the last thirty-one years, and the B.B.C. Dance Orchestra.
Mr. Cochran will himself introduce many of these successes tonight. He will recall memories of such tunes and stars as ' Blue Boy,' his own favourite song. sung by Nellie Taylor in May fair and Montmartre at the Oxford in 1922; of Alice Delysia in ' Please Do It Again ' from the same show ; of Florence Mills singing ' Sleepy Hills of Tennessee,' from Blackbirds ; of such stars as June, Jessie Matthews. Elsie Carlisle , Peggy Wood , Mary Ellis , Noel Coward ,
Gertrude Lawrence , Elizabeth Welch , and Sonme Hale. Several of these stars will be heard in person, but it is impossible to say in advance which of them will be able to come to Mr. Cochran's s birthday party in the studio. Listeners may rely on an hour of memorable entertainment, and a few very pleasant surprises.

Listeners will hear the Second News tonight, and every Saturday until the end of the year, in the new form foreshadowed by the experimental transmission on July 1. The News, as the timings indicate, will be presented in sections, designed to meet as nearly as possible the needs of various types of listeners. The first section at 9.0 will contain the weather forecast and a rapid summary of the main events of tho day : news, as it were, in spoken headlines. At 9.5 the news of the day will be more fully and more vividly presented in Roving Commentary' by the use of broadcasting resources ; this second section will contain short topical talks from the studio or relayed from the scene of events : sound pictures, either relayed direct or recorded at the time of happening ; and such other methods of expanding and illustrating the news as opportunity offers. At 9.25 comes ' The Economic Background,' an expert's survey of the week's movements in Trade and Finance. At 9.30 the News ends with the Sports Bulletin,
I giving results in full in direct form.
This method of presentation should be regarded as experimental ; it depends for its effectiveness very largely on technical considerations and fluctuations in the news-value of the day's events. The opinions, criticisms, and suggestions of listeners will be welcomed.
