This is the continuation of a previous series of talks on 'Great Sailors of the West.' Sir Richard Grenville, a cousin of Sir Walter Raleigh, was a Cornishman, and one of the greatest of the Elizabethan heroes. Tennyson's ballad 'The Revenge' commemorates the event which crowned Grenville's career of almost unparalleled courage. The Revenge was suddenly overwhelmed by a strong force of Spaniards. She could have got away with the rest of the English fleet, but Grenville, either by accident or design, stayed to fight it out. Cut off from his countrymen, and completely surrounded by the ships of the enemy, he put up a desperate resistance for fifteen hours. The Revenge was reduced to a helpless wreck, and Grenville, sorely wounded, was taken prisoner.

(From Swansea)

The Ystalyfera and District Choral Society
Conducted by W.D. Clee

The choir had its beginnings in the Ystalyfera Operatic and Orchestral Society. Soon after its formation, it won second prize in the chief choral competition at the Swansea National Eisteddfod in 1924. At Treorchy 'National' in 1928 the first prize was secured in a memorable competition. The first prize at Llanelly in 1930 was another triumph, and this year the premier award fell to the choir again in an exciting 'North versus South' battle at Bangor.
