'Fred Weatherly, an appreciation'
For over half a century some of the songs on every piano throughout the English speaking world have borne the familiar announcement, 'Words by F. E. Weatherly.' From 'Nancy Lee' and 'The Midshipmite' of the late seventies to 'Up from Somerset' and 'Roses of Picardy' of modern times is a far cry: yet Fred Weatherly gave us them all, as well as the, 'Holy City', 'Darby and Joan,' 'Beauty's Eyes,', 'Thora,' 'Danny Boy,' and a host of other songs which have become household names.
Fred. E. Weatherly died at Bath, where he lived for many years, in September, 1929, at the age of eighty. On his house a commemorative tablet is being placed by the Corporation and Citizens of Bath. This will be unveiled by Dame Clara Butt, O.B.E., the most distinguished singer of his songs, today, October 8.
The form of memorial it is proposed to raise to him is the endowment in perpetuity of a bed In the Royal Mineral of Bath - a National Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases, founded in 1738 by the efforts of Beau Nash to bring within the reach of poor persons of Great Britain and Ireland the healing waters which for two thousand years have been pouring out their abundant supply.
