A programme for children under five
Nursery rhymes stories, and music
Hob, Shoe, Hob,' the ' blacksmith's song,' is unique among the nursery rhymes we play in these programmes, for, in contrast to the well-known rhymes with their traditional tunes, this is a version of a little-known jingle with a tune specially written by Ann Driver. It is, however, like many other nursery rhymes in that it lends itself to activity as well as to singing. We have an amusing letter on this subject from a mother who describes how she and the children ' have been horses, drummer men, soldiers, Humpty Dumpty falling off the wall, and all the other things you invite us to be. But,' she adds, ' for the past week all has been altered. We have had to sit perfectly still with neither singing nor acting. The reason? Daddy is home on holiday, and he can't bear to miss a single word. But today " Hob, Shoe, Hob " got us back to normal and nobody made bigger bangs than Daddy. With the help of another daughter on holiday from school, I'm sure we beat all other Hob, Shoe, Hobbersl' Well, several times this week, the ' other Hob, Shoe, 'Hobbers ' will be able to take up the challenge! Last week Gwen went with Mr. Fulton on business to Wiltshire. She rang up during the evening to say she would be late home. At half-past one Gwen still had not arrived home and Dr. and Mrs. Dale got very worried. Mr. Fulton's car had broken down on a lonely road. It was a pouring wet night and Mr. Fulton refused to try to repair the car. He went to sleep in the back of it, so Gwen stopped a lorry to get a lift into the next village, so that she could telephone to her mother. The driver of the lorry persuaded Gwen to spend the night at his house. Gwen arrived home the next afternoon much amused because she felt the whole thing had been so absurd. Maud French had fibrositis. Mrs. Freeman went to see her, hoping to be asked to manage the school while Maud was ill. Bob took Gerda to Vicky's party. She was a great success and Bob was obviously jealous. This made Vicky decide to return to Paris to marry a man who had wanted to marry her for a long time.
