Last week Gwen went with Mr. Fulton on business to Wiltshire. She rang up during the evening to say she would be late home. At half-past one Gwen still had not arrived home and Dr. and Mrs. Dale got very worried. Mr. Fulton's car had broken down on a lonely road. It was a pouring wet night and Mr. Fulton refused to try to repair the car. He went to sleep in the back of it, so Gwen stopped a lorry to get a lift into the next village, so that she could telephone to her mother. The driver of the lorry persuaded Gwen to spend the night at his house. Gwen arrived home the next afternoon much amused because she felt the whole thing had been so absurd. Maud French had fibrositis. Mrs. Freeman went to see her, hoping to be asked to manage the school while Maud was ill. Bob took Gerda to Vicky's party. She was a great success and Bob was obviously jealous. This made Vicky decide to return to Paris to marry a man who had wanted to marry her for a long time.
