One of the early attempts to produce a machine which would simulate talk was the Voder, exhibited at the New York World's Fair in 1939. Mr. Watkins was in charge of it and of the girls who spent a year learning to operate the keys and pedals that controlled its 'voice.' He plays some recordings of the Voder and tells (simply) how it worked.
