reads favourite poems
The late Robert Donat began his career when a schoolboy by giving recitals of poetry in North Country towns. His stage and screen career never diminished his love of poetry and especially of reading it aloud. Listeners will recall his frequent broadcasts of poetry. When illness kept him from the theatre and the film studios he bought a tape-recorder and began to record poetry at home.
After his death, his son John Donat found a number of these recordings, several of which are included in this programme and which have not been broadcast before. Together with them are recordings made in earlier years for the British Council and an extract from the last broadcast he made for the BBC. Programme arranged and introduced by John Donat
