An Action for Damages
Brooklyn-January 1875
The Rev. Henry Ward Beecher , lecturer, journalist, and preacher, was a legendary figure in America when this action was heard. Sixty-two years of age, he stood accused of ' criminal conversation ' (adultery) with the wife of his friend Theodore Tilton , a much younger man. Tilton sued for damages of 100,000 dollars. A remarkable story was unfolded in the Brooklyn City Court, and the issue of the trial largely contributed to the ruin of both parties.
Narrator, Edward Ward
Script by Richard Du Cann
