Edited and introduced by James Fisher
Pigeon Problems
There is a good deal still to be learnt about the four species of pigeon which breed with us, and about the collared dove which has recently colonised this country.
MICHAEL RIDPATH tells of his investigations into the pattern of wood pigeon migrations. Miss Tkrry GOMPERTZ enquires into street pigeon ecology in Hampstead, and compares notes with DEREK GOODWIN who has been working on the stock dove also in London. The astonishing spread of the collared dove north-westwards across Europe from Turkey to Holland and now to Britain is outlined by JAMES FISHER.

Three stories from ' The Jungle Book ' told by David
1 — ' The White Seal'
Oh, hush thee, my baby, the night is behind us, .
And black are the waters that sparkled so green.
The moon, o'er the combers, looks downward to find us ,
At rest in the hollows that rustic between.

Appeal on behalf of the Ockenden Venture (Incorporated under the War Charities Act 1940) by Richard Todd
Contributions will be gratefully acknowledged and should be addressed to Richard Todd Esq., [address removed]
The Ockenden Venture exists to help the children of Europe's displaced persons camps to find education and training in England. These children are of Polish, Baltic, and other East European nationalities whose parents have existed since the war in refugee camps and are mostly former victims of Nazi labour and concentration camps. Since this ' venture ' became a recognised Charity in 1955, seventy-five children have been helped and there is a waiting-list of more than 250 wishing to leave the sordid and overcrowded life of the camps.

by Salvador de Madariaga
'Of all the labels that have been, and are, attached to me, the one to which I feel least entitled is that of historian; though I also feel that it is perhaps to the case of the historian that my favourite dictum applies most aptly: he who is nothing but a historian is not even a historian. History, after all, is a tale of human affairs and no one who has not had a taste of human affairs can tell the true story which they both reveal and conceal. It was, then, just as well that I learned history in life before I learned it in books ...'

by Sir Conrad Corfield
' A certain tutor to our Royal Princes was once asked how he got his job. He is said to have replied, " By bowing lower than the others." I realised that the story was apocryphal when I became by accident Assistant Private Secretary to the Viceroy of India. Court etiquette was strictly observed in Viceregal circles and one of the first things I learned was that the Court bow was made only from the neck.'
