'Long, long ago during the Spanish Civil War,' says Mr. Griffiths, 'Fernando came to live with us for a short time. Nowadays refugees are part of the world's landscape, but he was much less a refugee than an ambassador. He had come to England with other children from the bombed cities of Spain.'

A novel by Ernest Raymond adapted for radio by Mabel Constanduros and Mollie Greenhalgh
In view of the recent revision of the laws regarding capital punishment the story which Ernest Raymond has to tell in 'We, the Accused' must be related to its background of the years just before 1914. It is the story of a fundamentally decent man (Paul Presset) who, under the strain of circumstances, commits a crime. In the radio version by the late Mabel Constanduros it has been impossible, to cover all the ground of the novel, which depends for much of its interest on the acute psychological insight into the characters and the slowly mounting tension that leads to the inevitable and final catastrophe. The author draws a convincing picture of England in the early part of this century, of the conditions of life, and especially of the class to which Paul Presset belongs.
Despite obvious difficulties in recreating all this in a limited space of time and in another medium it is hoped that the broadcast may give at least the essence of this fine novel.
