The engines of the Great Western Railway, and now of the Western Region, have long had their own special look. This was largely created by George Jackson Churchward, who was born in 1857 and was for many years chief mechanical engineer of the G.W.R. Mr. Hamilton Ellis talks about his contributions to the design of railway engines.
Sir William Stanier, who was Churchward's assistant before he became chief mechanical engineer of the L.M.S., contributes some recorded reminiscences of Churchward.
